Dear YMCA of the Foothills Family,

October is upon us! My family knows, Fall is my favorite time of the year as college football is in full swing (Go Iowa Hawkeyes), the MLB Playoffs start (can the Dodgers pull off a three-peat), cooler weather, and of course our Y’s “Trunk or Treat”.

Kelly, the kids, and I wrapped up the last days of summer camping at Jalama State Beach in Santa Barbara County as we celebrated my 53rd birthday by doing what we love most. We had a chance to build driftwood structures, dig for sand crabs, enjoy a world-famous Jalama Burger, and, most importantly, spend quality time together.

As for things back here at the Y, September was a busy month, as we held our Board of Directors Annual Meeting & Retreat at Descanso Gardens on September 9th. The Board of Directors began the process of building out our new strategic plan – Vision 2030: Heart of the Foothills. Our keynote speaker was Altadena Town Councilmember Anton Anderson who spoke about the ongoing impact that Eaton Fire has had on Altadena and his own family, his extended family’s triumph in overcoming the losses of the fire, and his gratitude to our Y’s response in support and recovery of that community over the past two years. We enjoyed presentations by La Canada Flintridge Mayor, Jeanne Kim-Hobson and City Manager Dr. Dan Jordan, as they shared the goals of the city for the next year.

The afternoon session featured generative dialogue on expanding services to Altadena, upcoming capital improvement projects for CCY and CVY, reinvesting in community outreach, and structuring our Y to expand service across the foothills. I look forward to sharing the final strategic plan and the 2026 Impact Report with you in the coming months, which will highlight the amazing work your Y is doing.

October is a great opportunity to participate with the Y on a couple of special community events, and I would be honored to have you join me and my family at the following:

35th Annual Community Prayer Breakfast

On Saturday, October 3rd, the YMCA of the Foothills will hold our 35th Annual Community Prayer Breakfast in the Upper Parking Lot at the Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA. This year’s Keynote Speaker is Dave Avramovich, Regional Director for Young Life Los Angeles and Head Coach for La Cañada High School Football. This is a limited-space event, so to secure your spot as a $700 table sponsor, please contact Director of Mission Advancement Joanne Pingry at jpingry@ymcafoothills.org.

6th Annual Trunk-or-Treat Community Event brought to you by Thomas Atamian & Associates

I wish you all good health and happiness as we welcome the fall season.

Onward and Upward!
