Meet Lou Fried
"I started off at the YMCA in ’54 in Youngstown, Ohio. The day I turned ten, it was my daddy’s birthday present to me. I actually wanted a Schwinn bicycle but at the time he started me at the YMCA in Jujitsu...and I thank God he did! It opened up a world of new things for me.
I got onto the Seal Team in the Navy because I was already a black belt. I was a lieutenant for 35 years. My forte has been martial arts for 64 years. It’s so important to exercise. Because of my tour with the special forces, my law enforcement involvement, and martial arts, I’ve had many surgeries. It’s necessary to keep moving and keep working on it when age happens.
I’ve been very fortunate the life I’ve had. I’ve been coming to this our Y for 2 1/2 years. I love it and even met my wife at the Y! I was working out with the weights, and I saw this young lady on a bicycle with her hands up in the air. She was exercising her upper body while she was exercising her lower body. I looked at her and just had to go over and introduce myself. We ended up getting married in the Samuelson Chapel on the Y campus. We wanted just a small wedding, and since the Y is very important to both of us, the chapel was the place.
We love our Y and are so blessed to be a part of the Y family."
